Ben Kenneally competing in the 2013 Nice Ironman is proud to have sponsored Ben Kenneally competing in the 2013 Nice Ironman competition, his first Ironman competition, in support of Parkinson’s disease research through the Rotary Foundation.

Set throughout the rugged, picturesque coastline of Southern France, the Nice Ironman competition is a grueling 3.8km swim, 180km cycle, and full marathon (42km). Ironman athletes train for months or even years to compete in this true test of human physical and mental endurance. They follow rigorous training programs, special diets, and devote hundreds of hours of time to preparing for the competition. Simply finishing an Ironman is an incredible feat.

Taking place in the heat of late June, the Nice Ironman wound along the coast and into the mountains of Southern France. The swim took place in the open waters of the Mediterranean directly in front of Nice’s Promenade des Anglais and in view of thousands of cheering spectators. The open water, unstructured nature of the swim challenges athletes to deal with unpredictable weather conditions combined with the chaos of 2800 athletes rushing into the sea.

The 180km cycle that followed took athletes up into the hill’s surrounding Nice, with grueling climbs and spectacular descents through the stunning terrain of the Cote d’Azur. The athletes passed through numerous towns and villages as their route snaked through, over, and down, the mountains.Along the way, supporters lined small French towns and high mountain roads, often following their athlete through the hills by car to catch as much of the race as possible.

The closing stage of the Ironman sees athletes return to Nice’s Promenade des Anglais to run their marathon along the waterfront. As the third and final leg, the marathon pushes the athletes’ endurance to the max in the blazing Mediterranean sun as they run up and down the promenade.

Ben finished the Nice Ironman in an inspiring 10 hours, 38 minutes, and 53 seconds, placing 395 out of 2800, a spectacular result, particularly for a first Ironman. In addition to his athletic achievement, he raised more than $4500 USD in his fundraising efforts, of which was proud to be a part. His dedication, passion, athleticism, and commitment to raising awareness and funds for Parkinson’s research are an inspiration.

You’re awesome Ben Kenneally and thank you for supporting a great cause!
