As Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Newport Federal, Chuck Horning boasts more than 40 years of experience in business and real estate investment. Educated at Pacific Union College in California’s Napa Valley, Chuck Horning received a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. Founding Newport Federal in 1970, Chuck Horning established the company with the intention of focusing predominantly on acquisitions that would retain value over time. Since its inception, Newport Federal has flourished under Chuck Horning’s skilled leadership, amassing an extensive portfolio of properties located throughout the United States. During the 1970s and 1980s, Chuck Horning built and operated numerous health care facilities and hotels, many of which he eventually sold in order to focus on new investments. In the ensuing decade, Chuck Horning chose to pursue a wide range of projects, including ranch preservation and commercial office park development. In addition to directing his organization’s real estate investment arm, Chuck Horning also served as President of Mason Pharmaceuticals, a drug manufacturing company and subsidiary of Newport Federal.
Always seeking new avenues for expansion, Chuck Horning acquired the Telluride Ski & Golf Resort (Telski) in 2003. Based in beautiful Telluride, Colorado, Telski owns and manages numerous luxury properties in the scenic town and surrounding areas, consistently posting yearly revenue gains in the past decade. Chuck Horning began to institute major alterations in Telski’s infrastructure shortly after gaining a major share in the company. In 2004, those changes paid off. With Chuck Horning’s assistance, that year proved to be the best in Telski’s history, as the Telluride Ski Area logged 411,396 skier days. The following year, Chuck Horning continued to direct his efforts toward Telski’s growth, resulting in an impressive 390,346 skier days.
Chuck Horning initially took on the Telski venture with an eye toward the company’s fiscal sustainability. In addition to meeting Chuck Horning’s criteria for a solid financial investment, Telski has also proven to be an asset to the greater Telluride community. Several years ago, Telski was recognized for its environmentally sound business practices, winning a Silver Eagle Award from the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA). To facilitate Telski’s continued success, Chuck Horning remains committed to working with local residents to preserve Telluride for generations to come.
A recognized environmentalist and successful businessman, Chuck Horning has devoted much of his time to improving the natural conditions of his 12,000-plus acres of ranch land in California and Hawaii.
