How to Determine What Job is Best for You

Are you having a hard time finding the right job?

There are actually a lot of people out there who have never felt like their career suited them just right. But, there is a job out there for everyone – something that matches your personality, interests, and goals. What’s your calling in life? Taking a step back to analyze your career path and how it meets your personal needs (beyond just having a great salary, of course) is an important step to finding the right job. Here are a few steps to help you figure out which one is right for you.

Get to School

The classes you take in high school, college, tech, or vocation schools will give you a good insight into what you would like to actually do for a living. This is an opportunity to explore and experiment, and find out what, exactly, will hold your interest and reward your strengths. Once you narrow down a favorite field of study, you will be better equipped to choose a job when the time comes.

While you complete your studies, be sure to keep an eye on employment websites and look at resume examples to find out what it takes to qualify for a job in your chosen field. Certain companies require a master’s degree even for an entry level position. If these jobs require that level of education, it is even more important to stick with the subjects you enjoy.

Life Skills and Talents

What are your skills and talents? Can you find a job that lets you excel in those areas where you have the most interest? Everyone can bring something different to the table, and you’ll be able to thrive in your position if you can find a job that has a need for your unique abilities.
You might possess a hidden talent that could land you the best job. Think about your hobbies or extracurricular activities. Is there a job that’s related to your own special abilities? Is there something that will use your language, music, or organizational abilities? Think about them all and keep them in mind as you start a job search.

Understanding Your Career Personality

Have you ever taken a career quiz or personality assessment? These tests were designed to help you understand, in a very objective way, what kind of jobs will appeal to your interests and highlight your skills and personality. While many schools provide these types of tests to help young people choose a college path, there’s no reason not to test yourself again when you’re looking for something new.

Are you a creative person who only finds joy in building something new and unique? Maybe you prefer a job that will require quick decisions and constant stress and excitement. On the other hand, you may have a deep desire to provide help for people in need. A simple test may be able to help you understand those sides of your personality and steer you toward a more appropriate job.

These tests can be administered by a career counselor who can also guide and encourage you to find your specific job. There are a wide range of jobs out there – careers that will fit almost any personality type. If you take a step back, you will be able to find a job that is rewarding in more than just the financial sense.
