Get the Job You Want without Losing the One You Have

While it is not uncommon for employees to search for a new career path when they hold a current job, there can be certain challenges that can crop up with this type of job search. If it becomes apparent to your supervisors that you are looking for employment elsewhere it can backfire and possibly lead to your dismissal. The job you have may not be ideal, but it is important to continue to impress your employer to avoid losing your job before you are prepared to replace it. However, the best time to test the job market is when you have a position to fall back on. Make sure that your search is both courteous and discreet by keeping the following tips in mind.

1. Keep Your Job Search to Yourself
Discretion is essential if you don’t want to endanger your current position. Hiring new employees can be a time-consuming and expensive process. For this reason many employers will begin looking for your replacement as soon as they get wind of your intentions. If they find someone before you secure another position then you may end up out of a job.

2. Dedicate Time to Your Job Search
An effective job search can take up a good deal of time. If you’re not willing to put in the hours before and after work to find your new job then it may be best to wait until you are prepared to do so. This can be difficult to accomplish when you’re working full time but it is often a necessary element for success.

3. Don’t Search for a Job During Work Hours
Never use company resources or time to look for a new job. This includes accessing your employer’s network, using your company email account, or company equipment for your job search. This type of activity is usually not productive and doing this will make it more likely that your employers will find out what you are doing. When you are at work it is best to focus on the aspects of your job and leave the job search for your personal time.

4. Don’t Waste the Time of Potential Employers
If you are presented with the opportunity to interview or with an actual job offer don’t leave the recruiter waiting for a response. Just because you have a steady paycheck does not mean that you should toy with potential employers. Respond to phone calls and emails in a timely manner or you may lose out on a job to another candidate.

5. Don’t Schedule Interviews During Work Hours
Try to attend interviews during time frames that will not interfere with your regular work hours. If this is not possible then it may be best to take a personal day or vacation time for jobs interviews that you believe have strong potential.

6. Stay in Line with the Company Dress Code
If you show up to work dressed for an interview it may arouse suspicion. This is especially true if the company culture embraces a casual dress code. Avoid dressing differently than you would on a regular work day and arrange to change your attire before the interview at an offsite location.

7. Don’t Be Careless with Your Resume
It is a good idea to be selective with the people or companies you share your resume with during any type of job search. Simply sending your resume out to as many job openings as possible will not benefit your job hunt or your present job. This includes the use of social media when you are looking for a job. Even if you don’t believe it will get back to your employer it is still a possibility if you are not careful.

The process of securing another position while you are still working for your employer can be a tricky situation. Take your existing work seriously and try to leave a positive impression behind you. Always keep in mind that it is best to leave an organization with your reputation intact. Never say anything negative about your employer during your job search and remember that the people you work with today will likely be a part of your network for the life of your career. If you happen to come to the realization that you are working for a great company, at a job you enjoy, then it is also OK to ease up on your search and shift your focus. Finally, your job search will be much more effective with a strong, professionally written resume.
